Purdy

Driving back through La Linea, about 12 years ago after collecting our daughter from Gib Airport, she noticed a tiny black bundle just crouching in the middle of the road.  Insisting that we stop, she got out of the car and picked up this tiny feral kitten, who then proceeded to mew consistently.  We placed her gently on the paved side opposite the beach, and I was ready to drive on.

However, my daughter had other ideas, and insisted we wait to see if the mother returned which of course she did not. After about 30 minutes my daughter proudly announced we were the new owners of Purdy (so called because it is short for perdido (lost) and I loved  Purdy in The Avengers!

The vet thought she was about 3-4 weeks old and we fed her liquids to start.  She is now a beautiful sleek 12-year-old feline.

Pongo

After Purdy had settled in, about 6 weeks later, a ginger bundle suddenly appeared in our garden.  Because we were not sure we really wanted another cat, we tried to ignore him, but he was a persistent little devil.

After about three days of watching, he was still there, looking extremely sorry for himself, and my wife just opened the garden door a crack, and whoosh! He was in the house and had no intention of leaving.  Welcome to Pongo, at this time about 2-3 months old.

Again 12 years later a very large and solid ginger tom, with the most loving nature.

Molly was a “garden” cat, living in the community gardens.  She was in need of some TLC, as she was extremely skittish of humans and we thought she had been badly mistreated at some stage in her short life and so the lady who fed them asked us whether we could “home her” as and when needed.

Of course, once “homed” she stayed “homed”, and again 12 years later is an extremely beautiful mink coloured lady of the house, and she still rules the others as if she is their mother, being about 12 months or so older than them.

Happy ending

We moved back permanently to the UK a couple or so years ago, and they of course came with us, managing to suffer the journey back with not too much trouble.  They settled in very quickly, have picked up the language ok, and Brexit has not presented any problems for them.  They did, I am sure, miss the hot lazy days in the garden in Spain!  They are however very proud of their Spanish heritage and proudly have Spanish Passports!

So, three good stories about cats that would have undoubtedly not have had the long and pampered lived they are having now.

“Even though Paul’s family and these lucky cats moved back to the UK, he is still sponsoring us to help other cats as well. We are very grateful for that support.” AGYA
